What is it?

It is a Diploma in Aviation Management and a Commercial Pilot License in response to the aviation industry's desire to employ graduates with a strong background in business and management education.
This Ontario College Diploma program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to become a commercial pilot. Through a series of classroom-based courses and hands-on practical labs, students develop the required level of proficiency to complete the Transport Canada Commercial Pilot License written examination (CPAER) and practical flight test.

Algonquin College has partnered with Ottawa Aviation Services to provide a training schedule of approximately 250 hours of flight-time experience. During the final term, students can select one of the following areas of specialization: flight instructor, two crew or cruise relief pilot - IATRA, or seaplane rating and jet transition. Each of these options offers students numerous opportunities for direct-entry jobs with aviation employers.

In response to the aviation industry's desire to employ graduates with a strong background in business and management education, students receive a solid foundation in business management, which allows Algonquin graduates to obtain work in various facets of the aviation industry including entry-level management.
As part of OAS and Algonquin College's commitment to training highly-qualified graduates, the program also offers practical skills that enhance employment opportunities, such as, first aid, fuel handling, aircraft handling, winter operations, cockpit resource management, maintenance skills, and dispatching. The Ottawa Airport is considered to be the Gem of Canada for Flight Training. It is a complex Class C Terminal control zone located only minutes away from the practice area. Students begin flying with large commercial air traffic right away and learn to develop confidence in busy airspace. This experience will prove to be very beneficial in landing that all important first flying job.

Who is it for?

  • Are organized in their work and pay attention to detail.
  • Want to work in a challenging environment.
  • Have strong observational and analytical skills.
  • The Commercial Pilot license allows you to work for any Canadian Air Operator.

International Students?

The Algonquin International Education Centre (IEC) welcomes students from over 100 countries; visiting faculty; and our partners in education from around the world.
The IEC is a warm and welcoming place where each member of the staff is knowledgeable and experienced to help you with issues related to your personal needs and academic goals. The IEC is also committed to the development of cross-cultural awareness for students and staff.
The IEC is more than an on-campus resource facility for international students. Its key goals include international involvement through projects and partnerships, and internationalizing our learning environment. To that end, we encourage Algonquin faculty and staff to travel internationally and to develop broader cultural perspectives.
